Description of Work Unit

The position will be located at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) at Colorado State University (CSU) and will include the opportunity to advance the Lab’s International Biological Information System (IBIS) that supports a variety of ecological databases for both biodiversity and citizen science. The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory conducts cutting-edge ecological research. The NREL is a leader in ecosystem science and is the flagship program of the department of ecosystem science and sustainability (ESS) at CSU. The overall mission of NREL is to increase our fundamental understanding of the environment through collaborative applications of ecology and ecosystem science principles which contribute to policy and management decisions that promote sustainability. The Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in the discipline of watershed science, as well as an undergraduate program in ecosystem science and sustainability.

Position Summary

The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University seeks a motivated full-time citizen science post-doctoral fellow to serve as a senior software engineer / web developer / ecological informatics specialist to develop and integrate the software of two web platforms (CitSci.org and CyberTracker.org) for a sustainable software integration NSF-funded project. This position involves developing web application programming interfaces (APIs) and Software As A Service (SAAS) for data sharing and exchange between citizen science platforms. The position requires extensive knowledge of large-scale relational database management systems, PHP scripting, front-end user experience (UX) design, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and JQuery. The position will work with a team of developers using agile development approaches to deliver project deliverables. Familiarity with PHP frameworks (e.g., Symfony) as well as JavaScript Frameworks a plus. The position is required given the complex deliverables in our Cyber-FABRICS grant focused on software integration of CitSci.org, CyberTracker.org, and other similar platforms.

Required Job Qualifications

Required qualifications include a minimum of a Ph.D. in Natural Resources, Computer Science, or a related field; data management skills including demonstrated proficiency in relational database management using MS SQLServer and SQL:, skills in PHP programming, publications related to applied web application development, demonstrated skills related to developing, testing, and maintaining cyber-infrastructure support systems for scientific applications; and skills related to project management, software lifecycles, object-oriented design, database management, and programming in PHP. Five years experience in web development, informatics, and API development and a minimum of one year experience managing software development projects required.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Desirable/preferred experience and qualifications include: programming experience for developing dynamic web applications; expertise in website design; programming in PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, JQuery, SQL, and T-SQL. The position requires maintaining MS-Windows based web servers that deliver dynamic database-driven web content for numerous websites. Familiarity with server side scripting using PHP is a plus. Experience developing secure Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) desired. Experience with Open Authentication (OAuth 2.0) also desired along with familiarity with Asana and Visual Source Safe (or comparable version control software) desired.
