Description of Work Unit

The Confucius Institute at Colorado State University (CI at CSU) is a cooperative project of Colorado State University, the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) in China, and Hunan University, located in Changsha, China.

The CI at CSU is dedicated to “enhancing the understanding of Chinese language and culture” in our region. This occurs through a wide range of public activities and programs. The CI at CSU also promotes research and collaborations on global water and environmental sustainability issues.

Position Summary

The Confucius Institute Manager is responsible for the administration of the Confucius Institute, including both projects and programs. The position’s focus will be on the day to day management of operations, including budget administration and oversight. This involves working in close collaboration with the CSU China Programs unit within the Office of International Programs (OIP), and interfacing with relevant departments at CSU, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), Hunan University, as well as public schools, businesses and organizations throughout Northern Colorado.

This is a full-time Administrative Professional position at CSU. The position requires occasional evening or weekend hours for event coordination, as well as a valid Colorado driver’s license or the ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver’s license by the start date (or access to a licensed driver) and the willingness to travel to schools and locations off-campus for regular meetings and events. The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in the United States at the time of application; International Programs cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.

This position reports to the Director of the Confucius Institute who, at present, is also the Associate Provost for China Programs.

Required Job Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, education, business, science, public administration, international/intercultural studies, or a related field
• In depth experience with or knowledge of Chinese culture and language
• Professional experience in program coordination and event management
• Professional experience managing budgets
• Fluency in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
• Advanced proficiency in Standard Mandarin Chinese
• The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in the United States at the time of application; International Programs cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Undergraduate or graduate degree in a field that is relevant to understanding Chinese language and culture
• Experience working at a Confucius Institute, or other professional experience involving Chinese language and culture
• Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
• Experience with desktop publishing and website maintenance
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Outreach and Programming
Duty/Responsibility

• Work jointly with the Director of The Confucius Institute and the China Side Director to plan and implement cultural and outreach programming and activities including conferences, lecture series, and events.
• Manage all aspects of the program planning process, including working with guest speakers, room scheduling, travel arrangements, publicity and other logistic details.
• Develop, plan and schedule CI classes every semester.
• Maintain the Confucius Institute website with support from OIP IT staff.
• Design public information materials such as brochures, fliers, presentations, and digital media with assistance from OIP communications staff.
• Develop announcements and press releases of CI at CSU activities for newsletters, newspapers, and websites, both on and off campus.
• Publicize all CI at CSU activities in relevant departments and colleges.
• Organize outreach and publicize CI classes and activities in local schools, businesses, as well as government and community entities

Duty/Responsibility

• Work with OIP fiscal officer to prepare budget proposals/reports.
• Maintain accounting for program development, implementation, budget tracking and reporting.
• Use CSU’s Kuali financial system to ensure the proper payment of all CI obligations through the accepted fiscal rules and regulations of CSU.
• Use the Confucius Institute (Classroom) project budget and final accounts system to submit budget and final financial reports to CI Headquarters (Hanban).

Duty/Responsibility

• Coordinate project communications in order to strengthen the profile of CI at CSU programs on campus.
• Track CSU activities on China in departments, colleges, and other research centers through an in-house database.
• Work closely with the director to create a CI program agenda around worldwide water and environmental sustainability issues, including organizing related conferences, workshops, and seminars, both at CSU and in China.
• Coordinate K-12 CI classroom and community engagement activities. This could include travel around the area and the state.

• Organize a weekly meeting for CI staff.
• Administer an archive for all CI classes and activities.
• Provide administrative and programmatic support for CSU China Programs activities as needed.
• Attend Confucius Institute programming-related meetings, serve on other relevant committees, and participate in Hanban-sponsored meetings representing the CI at CSU. This could involve travel to China.
• Manage and purchase office supplies as needed and approved.
• Other duties as assigned.
