Description of Work Unit

The Department of Anthropology exists to: 1) offer and maintain instructional programs that provide an understanding of the social, environmental, and evolutionary contexts of the human condition over time; 2) conduct research in programmatic areas of Environment, Development, Health and Well-Being, and professional techniques within the various sub-fields of anthropology and geography, in order to advance and expand knowledge in these respective fields; 3) actively participate in programs of interdisciplinary research.

Position Summary

The archaeological collections coordinator will be expected to convert existing paper archival and inventory systems into a digital platform, pursue external funding opportunities to improve existing storage methods and infrastructure (preventative conservation), create an institutional framework to collect box fees so that the archaeological collections can expand, manage the box fees budget, develop and teach a single class on anthropological museum studies, supervise undergraduate and graduate students working with the collections, and share narratives from the collection with interested partners and the public.

Required Job Qualifications

Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, or closely related field OR a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience as a collections coordinator or manager.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience modernizing archival databases into digital platforms, evidence of success at acquiring external funds for various projects, teaching experience, experience managing archaeological collections.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Acquisitions and Archival

Effort dedicated to modernizing existing archival systems and incorporating new acquisitions. Coordinates, supervises and manages the protection and care of archaeological collections. Researches the best practices for artifact conservation and techniques for analyzing archaeological collections, including classification of all artifact types and industries; bone, stone tools, ceramics, metal, etc.

The collection coordinator will identify appropriate internal and/external funds to apply for that will improve the facility, storage capacity, or support public engagement with the facility. The collection coordinator is expected to write 4 to 5 proposals a year, including budgets, in order to create a state of the art facility as well as support a portion of the position’s salary.

Job Duty Category Teaching

Effort dedicated to teaching one class per year on museum studies. The collection coordinator will design one undergraduate level class about curational techniques and science. After approval, the collection coordinator will serve as primary instructor for this course.

Effort dedicated to promoting the collections and meeting with partners about expanding collections. The collection coordinator will partner with the chair of the department, the supervising archaeologist, as well as federal and for-profit counterparts to engage the public with our collections.
