Description of Work Unit

The College of Natural Sciences encompasses eight departments: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics. Approximately 4,000 students pursue undergraduate degrees through twelve fields of study. An additional 700 students are obtaining M.S.- and Ph.D.-level education in each of our departments under the direction of college faculty. Position Summary

The College of Natural Sciences Office of the Dean invites applicants to fill a full-time position of Assistant Director of Development for Foundation and Corporate Relations (ADoD FCR) with a start date of August 28, 2017 or earlier.
The ADoD FCR is a 12-month, regular administrative professional appointment. As a member of the College of Natural Sciences team, the ADoD FCR is primarily responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of current and new prospects with interests in the departments and programs and facilities within the College of Natural Sciences. Responsibilities include coordinating the identification, strategic cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and other activities related to seeking corporate and foundation investments as well as individual donations in the College and the University. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Development for the College of Natural Sciences (EDoD CNS).

Required Job Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of three years of experience in grant writing, fundraising or administration in higher education or similar organization
• Must have the ability to conduct overnight business trips.
• Willingness to travel and work non-standard hours

3. Foundation identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship experience
4. Understanding and passion for the sciences

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility

Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for new and previously identified local and national corporate, foundation and individual prospects, working in collaboration with other staff in Corporate and Foundation Relations to shape and implement strategies.

Participate actively in the identification of funding opportunities provided by private foundations to bring key, high priority initiatives to the attention of the College faculty, dean, and other leaders.

Secure funding for CNS new and renovated facilities, research, and outreach programs.

Plan and implement all development activities concerning identified prospects—i.e., moves management plans, executive summaries, preparation of proposals, arranging for staff and faculty visits with prospective donors, etc. Ensure effective and efficient use of administrator and faculty time.

As a representative of the College, travel to meet prospects for the purpose of effective, coordinated, and efficient cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; when needed, travel with the dean, associate dean for research, department chairs, or EDoD for CNS.

Write all communications associated with College-wide corporation and foundation solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship.

Write correspondence between Dean of the College of Natural Sciences to high level corporations and foundations.

Prepare documents such as budgets, scientific work plans, and research proposals. In consultation with other affected units at the University, ensure that the documents align with the policies and procedures set by the University.

Utilizing a thorough understanding of the College’s priorities, build productive relationships with faculty and other staff at CSU to successfully identify leading scientific research being performed in the College.

Monitor and evaluate progress toward goals, provide statistical reports, and suggest/request appropriate research for individual/group, corporation, and foundation prospects. Prepare and monitor acknowledgments for all gifts received through the Offices of Corporate and Foundation Relations and Donor Relations.

Support the Executive Director of Development with scheduling internal meetings, creating and pulling reports, presentations, administrative issues, and other special initiatives.

Represent CNS to university development, faculty, students, and other Colleges regarding foundation and corporate relations development initiatives.

Collaborate on major proposals with Senior Associate Dean of Research as necessary.

Establish meaningful, collegial working relationships with development colleagues and other University offices such as the Office of Sponsored Programs, University Advancement, central Foundation and Corporate Relations offices, CSU Foundation, and the Vice President for Research office. Understand the roles and responsibilities of their offices and collaborate with these offices to facilitate the establishment of relationships with corporations and foundations.
