Description of Work Unit

The Equine Reproduction Laboratory is part of the Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University.

The CSU Equine Reproduction Program has developed leading-edge equine reproduction techniques for the equine industry for over 45 years. Techniques such as collection of semen and artificial insemination, recovery and transfer of equine embryos, shipping cooled semen, and shipping cooled embryos are now routine in the equine industry, due in large part to the research, education, and outreach efforts of the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory.

Position Summary

The position is a one-year Breeding Farm Intern at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory (ERL) to gain experience in equine breeding farm procedures and management.

Interns participate in a one-year, non-degree, program beginning on January 1 and finishing on December 31 or starting July 1 and finishing on June 30 of the following year. Applicants should have completed a BS in Equine Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline. The internship is designed to provide advanced training in breeding farm procedures and management techniques for individuals intending to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry. The intern receives a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of the one year program. A salary will be provided and interns will live in an apartment on-site at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory on the Foothills Campus of Colorado State University. Rent is required as with all on-campus housing.

Required Job Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science or related discipline.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. at time of application; the Department of Biomedical Sciences will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience with horses.
Demonstrated dedication and/or desire to work in the field of horse reproduction.

A primary goal of the Internship is to provide broad and substantial educational training to Interns in the field of horse reproduction. This training will consist of classroom courses in Equine Reproduction and Foaling Management plus clinical discussions during examinations of mares, foals and stallions. In addition Interns will learn communication skills via interactions with horse owners, stallion managers, horse haulers and trainers; learn proper techniques for maintenance of computerized and manual medical records including data entry; learn and participate in maintenance of horse inventory, including arrival and departures of horses, development of daily schedules for horse examinations and medical treatments; learn proper techniques for maintenance of late-term pregnant mares, techniques for prediction of foaling, plus observation of and attendance at foaling; learn proper techniques and participate in care of the normal newborn foal, how to perform and interpret diagnostic tests on foals and medical management of newborn foals with medical issues; learn techniques and participation in the clinical management of reproductive events in mares, including but not limited to interpretation of ultrasound examinations, artificial inseminations, collection and transfer of embryos, and hormone therapy; learn and participate in techniques for handling stallions, collection and evaluation of semen from stallions plus preparation of breeding doses of semen; learn techniques for cooled-storage and cryopreservation of semen; learn about and participate in proper techniques of maintenance of liquid nitrogen tanks and inventory of frozen semen; learning and participation in diagnosis and treatment of medical issues in mares, stallions and foals; learning and participation in horse care and herd health activities, such as application of bandages and leg wraps, administration of vaccines and dewormers, proper techniques of horse grooming and blanketing, plus learning from and assisting the farrier; learning basic and advanced methods of horse handling, loading horses onto and off of trailers, working with individual horses and horses maintained in a herd environment; learning proper methods to handle and restrain foals; understanding proper methods to transport horses, including how to drive a truck and horse trailer; learning about and participating in nutritional management of horses with special needs (i.e. horses with ‘metabolic syndrome’, pregnant mares, lactating mares and horses with a history of laminitis); learn about and participate in various means of housing and exercise of horses, such as individual stalls, stalls with outside runs, run-in-sheds, outdoor paddocks, turn-out paddocks, use of hot-walkers, etc.; learning about and participation in correct technique to maintain, clean, sterilize and store equipment and supplies, including but not limited to cleaning equipment, autoclaving, sterilization of supplies, disinfectant application for laboratory facilities, exam areas and horse stalls; organization and maintenance of equipment and supplies, including how to order and maintain an inventory of supplies at a breeding farm including stocking of supplies and equipment; collection, storage, submission and interpretation of diagnostic laboratory samples, including but not limited to blood samples, hair samples, uterine swabs and biopsy samples; learn about and participate in facility maintenance and safety, including but not limited to barn maintenance, safety with fences and gates; understand and participate barn rounds during the day and evening; learning to teach is another important aspect of the Internship; Interns will be instructed as to how to present educational material to undergraduate students, veterinary students, veterinarians, horse owners and other people interested in horse reproduction.

Interns will provide assistance in the Stallion Service and the Mare Service; duties will include, but are not limited to horse handling, record keeping, administration of hormones, etc. Interns will assist in examination of mares, stallions and foals, semen collection and evaluation, insemination of mares and collection and transfer of embryos. Interns will assist with general laboratory functions, including, but not limited to equipment cleaning, autoclaving, laundry, reception, etc. Interns will provide assistance to students enrolled in the Foaling Management class during examination of pregnant mares and foaling.
