Description of Work Unit

The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate and post-doctoral students

Position Summary

This position will provide laboratory support and laboratory technical services to the Virology section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This position will assist Virology section functions and diagnostic testing. The VDL seeks to fill 1 full-time Lab Technician position to work Monday- Friday. This position will be required to work some holidays, based on unit holiday staffing needs. The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist with virology diagnostics.

Required Job Qualifications

• The applicant must have graduated from an accredited college or university Bachelor’s degree program specifically in Microbiology, Virology, or a closely related field OR General Bachelor’s degree program plus two years of experience in microbiology or virology.
• Passing grade in Virology or letter of reference from a supervisor vouching for minimum working knowledge/competency in the areas of microbiology and virology.
• The applicant must have a working knowledge of aseptic technique.

• At least one year of experience working in a diagnostic or research virology laboratory is highly desirable.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills are extremely important.

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility

• Routine preparation of animal serum, cerebral spinal fluid, abdominal/ pleural effusions and tissues for direct and indirect fluorescent antibody assays and serum neutralization, AGID and ELISA using standard operating procedures. Routine preparation of fecal samples for ELISAs and tissues for virus isolation.
• Preparation of media, virus stocks and solutions for serum neutralization.
• Maintenance of cell cultures using aseptic technique. Preparation of cell cultures for serum neutralization tests and virus isolation. Maintain appropriate records as directed by supervisors, including quality control records.
• Effectively communicate with supervisors and coworkers regarding activities and other issues important to the successful completion of activities.
• Enter and report results to clients and veterinarians using the lab information system.
• Assist the section head with writing SOPs, and training students and visiting scientists in serologic and virologic techniques.

• Temperature and alarm checks for environmental chambers, incubators and other laboratory equipment
• Maintenance of logs associated with proper functioning of the laboratory and laboratory equipment
• Eyewash and shower station testing and record keeping
• Maintenance of CO2 incubators, monitoring of CO2 levels
• Other duties as assigned
• Maintain adequate inventory of supplies that are routinely used in the bacteriology lab, continually evaluate mechanisms for cost savings in purchased supplies
