The Basin is surrounded by mountains with elevations ranging from 5,000 ft. to 14,246 ft. Historically the economy has been based on agriculture and mining. The agriculture is primarily beef production on ranches growing grain and hay and using public land for grazing. However, an influx of new residents has prompted growth in hobby farms and markets and home gardening. There is also a dynamic recreational economy which is centered on the Telluride Ski Area. This interface between agriculture/mining and recreation has caused complex land use and environmental issues. The 4-H program currently includes forty 4-H members and six 4-H leaders.
