Description of Work Unit

The CSU Health Network at Colorado State University provides a full range of cost effective, on-campus, mental health and primary care medical services, referral for community specialty care and comprehensive health education and prevention services’ programming. Services such as physical therapy, dentistry and optometry, are available. The CSU Health Network is active in creating a healthy campus environment to support learning and success. The Medical Clinic at the CSU Health Network provides acute and chronic care to CSU students by appointments and on a walk-in basis for urgent concerns. Primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners care for students, with emphasis on preventive care, education, and continuity. The medical staff are supported by a full range of laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry, optometry, and nutrition services on site, and integrated care with counseling staff enhances the treatment of students with behavioral health concerns. Minor procedures are performed in the clinic. The Pharmacy is open between the hours of 7:30 am-5:30 pm Monday—Friday with reduced hours over summer and breaks, providing attractive work schedules for staff.

Position Summary

The Manager of Pharmacy Services reports to the Director of Medical Services or designee. The Manager of Pharmacy Services works as a registered pharmacist and directs the operations of the pharmacy at the CSU Health Network. The CSU Health Network Pharmacy is located on the first floor of the CSU Health and Medical Center and fills 200-250 prescriptions daily during the academic year.

Required Job Qualifications

Education, Licensure and Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Licensed to practice Pharmacy in Colorado, or eligible for a Colorado Pharmacy license.
  • Three years of supervisory experience in a pharmacy setting.
  • Five years experience as a pharmacist.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Characteristics:

  • Prior experience working in a college health center pharmacy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare delivery setting.
  • Ability to adhere to and advise pharmacy staff of changes on regulatory compliance including DEA, Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, OSHA, etc.
  • Experience with 3rd party reimbursement and insurance contract negotiation.
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse populations.
  • Strong knowledge of positive medication related outcomes and practices.
  • Demonstrated clinical and leadership abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and enforce medication policies to help ensure safe patient care.
  • Ability to effectively support pharmacy staff in identifying inappropriately prescribed medications based on diagnosis, duration, dose frequency, and/or patient characteristics.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with policies of the CSU Health Network, Colorado State University, State, Federal and HIPAA requirements.
  • Interest in the wellness of students and their family members and respect for the role of patients in the decision making process.
  • Membership in professional pharmacy organizations.

Essential Duties

  • Provide leadership to the CSU Health Network in the areas of safe and effective medication management as well as emerging issues in pharmacy including healthcare reform, electronic prescribing and third party billing and contracting.
  • Coordinate and supervise pharmacy operations of the CSU Health Network Pharmacy including prescription processing, customer service and order entry.
  • Supervise the staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians including conducting performance reviews, authorizing leave requests and approving work hours.
  • Manage the pharmacy budget in conjunction with the CSU Health Network Director of Business Services and the Director of Medical Specialty Services.
  • Establish pharmacy procedures to adhere to CSU Health Network protocols and policy in compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for gathering and documenting pharmacy occurrences for QI/QA purposes.

  • Advise prescribers on medication therapy. Advise nursing staff on the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Work closely with our insurance and billing departments to follow our reimbursements, pricing, posting and aging of accounts.
  • Work with our building partners regarding our services and implement adjustments that might be feasible to assist them.
  • Participate on appropriate CSU Health Network and University committees (i.e. QI committee) and attend monthly department head meetings.

Duty/Responsibility
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by adding and deleting medications according to usage, need, medication efficacy and cost effectiveness.
  • Work with appropriate CSU departments such as contracting to implement and maintain pharmacy supplies.
  • Monitor our OTC products and decide if changes may be needed in inventory depending on demands from consumers.

  • Dispense prescription medications by interpreting oral and written prescription orders, determine appropriateness of directions, strength, and dosage, monitor for medication interactions and allergies.
  • Advise patients about medications including side effects
  • Advise prescribing providers and other staff about medication interactions and dosages and give advice about other medication related issues and information as needed.
  • Advise patients regarding over-the-counter medications and other products that may be available depending on their symptoms and other health concerns.
