Position Summary

The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Colorado State University (CSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor faculty position in plant breeding and genetics. This position is a 60% research, 30% teaching, and 10% service appointment on a 9-month contract.
We seek applications from dynamic and motivated scientists who have expertise in plant germplasm evaluation, enhancement, and utilization. Candidates are sought with demonstrated capacity to integrate next-generation technologies and large datasets with classical field- and laboratory-based plant improvement approaches in their research program. The successful applicant will be expected to build a nationally and internationally recognized research program that integrates modern and conventional methods to make genetic discoveries and improve germplasm for established or potential new crops in Colorado and the surrounding region. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to, genetic resources characterization and evaluation, pre-breeding, genetics of disease and insect resistance, crop quality traits, health promoting properties, and the integration of advanced breeding and genetic technologies with phenotypic selection.
Opportunities exist for collaborations with plant breeders and geneticists from CSU, local private-industry groups, and the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Genetic Resource Preservation.
The successful candidate will teach an undergraduate level course in principles of genetics one semester each year and develop a graduate level course in the candidate’s area of expertise. Graduate student training and participation with undergraduate advising and recruiting are expected. Contributions toward outreach and service activities (e.g., interactions with commodity groups; presentations to the K-12 community; service to professional societies) are also required.

Required Job Qualifications

• Ph.D. in field related to the study of plant breeding and genetics (completed by application deadline).
• Experience in plant germplasm enhancement or genetic resources evaluation.
• Experience with genomic technologies (including high-throughput DNA markers and large datasets) relevant to crop breeding and genetics.
• A strong record of scholarly achievement commensurate with experience.
• Effective communication skills, with an emphasis on presenting and disseminating research information.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
• Evidence of clear potential or previous success in obtaining competitive research grant funding.
• Post-doctoral (or equivalent) research experience.
• Evidence of capacity for successful collaboration and potential to manage multidisciplinary research and education projects.
• Desire and ability to advance the department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through research, teaching and outreach with relevant programs, stakeholders, and activities.
