Position Summary

This position develops, markets and delivers non-credit educational programming in response to community needs. The position will provide leadership, guidance, direction and educational program support to the 4-H Youth Development Program in Jefferson County. The individual in this position works as a member of the local county 4-H team within the Extension office and as a local representative of Colorado State University. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the Jefferson County Extension Director.

The 4-H Youth Development Agent will work within a team consisting of another 4-H Youth Development Agent, 4-H Mentoring Program Coordinator, 4-H Camp Coordinator, 4-H Assistant and County Extension Director. This dynamic team will work collaboratively to determine areas of expertise and local responsibilities. The areas of focus within the Jefferson County 4-H program are: equine, livestock, small animals, shooting sports, Cloverbuds, general projects, school enrichment, after-school, outreach and volunteer development. Jefferson County 4-H is a very innovative and family centered environment focusing on teaching our members and leaders well beyond their involvement in our program.

Required Job Qualifications

• Completed master’s degree required. Candidates with a master’s degree in progress may be considered for interviews, but the degree must be completed by hire date. Bachelor and/or master’s required in agriculture, education, youth development, non-profit management, community engagement, volunteer management, human development, natural resources or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience (professional or volunteer) that demonstrates the ability to work with youth and youth organizations, including an understanding of youth development and youth program management.
• Background experience, coursework or training in the recruitment, training and management of volunteers, including conflict management.
• Personal or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes.
• Knowledge or experience in audience needs identification, program development, and evaluating results of programs.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team to affect change and obtain desired outcomes.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build relationships with people as individuals and in groups, and the ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
• Evidence of drive and initiative. Must be a self-starter and willing to learn.
• Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
• Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
• Strong organizational skills: ability to multitask; manage a number of projects simultaneously; and develop, track and implement projects and meet timelines.
• Must have valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, fund raising, contracting or cost recovery efforts.
• Experience in promoting, marketing or creating public awareness of program/services among key community decision-makers.
• Ability to speak Spanish.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting:
Duty/Responsibility

• As part of the 4-H team, plan, organize, implement and evaluate assigned components of the Jefferson County 4-H Youth Development Programs that support the growth and development of life skills for youth and adult audiences. This requires working in concert with the 4-H team to carry out 4-H activities such as the Jefferson County Fair & Festival, Open House, and the annual 4-H Achievement Night.
• As part of the 4-H team, identify and define program areas of interest and expertise, and allocate responsibilities among the team. Jefferson County 4-H offers programming in livestock, equine, small animal, shooting sports, general projects, Cloverbuds, school enrichment, after-school, outreach and volunteer development.
• Provide appropriate educational opportunities to 4-H youth and adult leaders to ensure integration of current best management practices for all program areas.
• In concert with the 4-H team, chaperone and support leadership activities for Jefferson County 4-H members including Leadership Development Conference, Colorado Leadership Camp, Youth Fest, Metro to Mountain, State 4-H Conference, State Fair, County Judging Teams and Quiz Bowl Teams and their activities. Many of these are overnight camps with 4-Hers from across Colorado.
• Actively participate in one or more Extension program and reporting units to provide youth development expertise for program development, delivery, and evaluation efforts statewide.
• Actively participate in professional development activities to keep abreast of changes within discipline areas.
• Serve as a resource for program areas of expertise to the general public as well as 4-H members and leaders.
• Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences.
• Develop and manage external partnerships and funding sources to support programming efforts, including grant writing.
• Participate in evening and weekend events, and occasional events requiring overnight stays.

• As a member of the 4-H team, provide leadership and support for an active, ongoing, diverse adult and youth volunteer-based program including volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education and training, motivation, evaluation, recognition and support.
• Provide leadership opportunities and training for 4-H leaders that will increase their effectiveness in working with youth and retain their commitment as volunteer leaders over sustained periods of time, developing middle management level volunteers to conduct and support programming.

• Support 4-H groups or committees related to the annual Jefferson County Fair & Festival, working with the 4-H team to coordinate efforts with the Fairgrounds staff and other staff and volunteers connected to the event.
• Support and build relationships with groups or committees working with 4-H youth including a few 501©3 organizations.
