Description of Work Unit

ORGANIZATION
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. LOCATION
These positions are to be located at either Eglin Air Force Base, FL or Tyndall Air Force Base, FL depending on staffing requirements. Eglin Air Force (AFB) is a United States Air Force base stretching over 724 square miles of land and over 123,000 square miles of water ranges in the Gulf of Mexico. Eglin AFB is located in Okaloosa County in northwestern Florida near the towns of Niceville, Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, and Valparaiso. These cities provide a variety of comfortable homes, schools, recreational facilities, businesses, and access to some of the best beaches in the world. Tyndall Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base located in Bay County on the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle, 12 miles east of Panama City. The Panama City area, best known for its sugar-white sand and emerald green waters, is a popular tourist destination.

Position Summary

Incumbent will be a member of the Gulf Coast Wildland Fire Support Module for the U.S. Air Force Wildland Fire Center based at Eglin AFB, FL. The Gulf Coast Wildland Fire Support Module is high paced program responsible for implementing an average of 150 prescribed burns and responding to 100 wildfires annually on Air Force property throughout Florida and the southeast U.S. This position requires work on active military training ranges with potential risk for unexploded ordnance and other related hazards. In addition, regular travel (up to 15 weeks per year) to other Air Force installations to perform similar tasks throughout the southeast will be required. The position is to be located at either Eglin Air Force Base, FL or Tyndall Air Force Base, FL depending on staffing requirements.

Required Job Qualifications

The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  • A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two year’s work experience in fire management is required
  • The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain a driver’s license and a Class B commercial driver’s license within 6 months of employment
  • Meet requirements for the National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards for Fire Fighter Type 2, which includes an annual pack test at arduous level and fire line refresher (maintained annually).
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • State or Nationally qualified as Tractor Plow Operator (TPOP)
  • Qualified as Helicopter Crew Member (HECM) and Plastic Sphere Dispenser Operator (PLDO)
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in wildland fire and forestry practices is desired (i.e. Tractor Plow, Skid Steer/Masticator, hauling equipment, etc.)
  • Experience with prescribed fire and wildfire suppression, familiarity with ecosystems and fire regimes of the southeast is highly preferred.
  • Degree in natural resource management or related field

Technically administers all aspects of the prescribed fire/fuels plan, ensuring that preparation, ignition, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation are completed to the specified standards. Monitors fire behavior, evaluates fire effects, identifies potential problems and makes recommendations. Supports wildfire suppression efforts in initial attack and in follow-up actions to safely and effectively control wildfires in accordance with the identified appropriate management response. Operates and maintains equipment to support firing operations and suppression activities such as chainsaws, and firing devices. Will meet and maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards.

Participates in preparedness reviews, proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and after action reviews. Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignment.

Incumbent will assist implementing land management plans which will include timber marking, RCW monitoring, herbicide applications, and road work. Other duties assigned to this position will include compiling and utilizing environmental and ecological data using personal data assistants (PDA) and ArcPad software, collecting data in post burn areas using a PDA, and ensuring that information collected gets turned in to proper personnel to get downloaded into a database.
