Description of Work Unit | Colorado State University (CSU) is a land-grant institution and a Carnegie Research University. CSU was founded as the Colorado Agricultural College in 1870, six years before the Colorado Territory gained statehood. It was one of 68 land-grant colleges established under the Morrill Act of 1862. The doors opened to a freshman class of 20 students in 1879. In 1935, the school became the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, or Colorado A & M, and was renamed Colorado State University in 1957. The University has grown to its present enrollment of approximately 34,000 students. The landscape architecture program originated in 1975 and is committed to ongoing exploration of design, precedent/history, nature and culture in order to prepare students for the challenges of the future and to enable faculty to achieve excellence in teaching, advising, research, and service. Colorado State University is currently breaking ground on the new Richardson Design Center (RDC). The Richardson Design Center will offer cutting-edge technologies in inspiring spaces to encourage multi-disciplinary and hands-on learning. As CSU President Tony Frank describes, “The Richardson Design Center will position Colorado State University to become an innovative hub for design-thinking and entrepreneurship in the Rocky Mountain region. Integrating with our exceptional academic programs in design, engineering, business, and the arts, it will be a magnet for creativity, where talented students, faculty, and industry leaders gather to learn, discover, and design together.” https://www.chhs.colostate.edu/alumni-friends/rdc.aspx. The Horticulture and Landscape Architecture department strives to discover, apply, and disseminate knowledge and technology while developing future leaders in the state, the nation, and the world. Through hands-on experiential learning in each of our three majors, Environmental Horticulture, Horticulture, and Landscape Architecture, we encourage human engagement with the landscape and demonstrate our focus to solve problems for people, agriculture, and the environment through scholarship and creativity fostered by teamwork and individual diversity. |
