Description of Work Unit

CASIT provides information technology services for the College of Agricultural Sciences and eight Agriculture Experiment Station centers around the state.

Position Summary

This position will help create, integrate and administer physical and virtual servers, on premise and in the cloud (hybrid) infrastructure that are used for research to support the college’s strategic investments in AgTech. The position will help manage the college’s research environment, including applications, client, file system, database management. The position will also be able to function in a Windows server environment and maintain client interconnectivity from Windows and Apple OS systems. This position will also be the Lead specialist for Mac/OS X support. This position requires someone who is reliable, responsible, ethical, and able to complete tasks with a team and independently with minimal supervision. The IT Systems Administrator must be comfortable working with different user bases such as students, faculty, staff, and administration. On-call duties are shared and may occasionally require evening and weekend work.

Required Job Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Information Technology or related field and three years of equivalent experience.
- Server system administration/ management experience including security, policy compliance, and exception processes.
- Significant Linux systems experience including diagnosing errors and performance problems related to hardware, network issues, and resource utilization.
- Strong interoperability experience with Linux, Microsoft Windows (desktop and server), OS X, Android, and iOS.
- RDBMS experience including database design, management, monitoring, and security.
- Experience in common web technologies and architectures such as LAMP and/or IIS.
- Experience writing scripts.
- Programming experience.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications

- Experience configuring Active Directory, LDAP, DNS, NIS, Shibboleth, SMB, NFS, and SSH.
- Experience/training in the deployment and support of VM Ware and/or Hyper-V hosts and clients.
- MySQL/MS SQL design, development, and management experience.
- Scripting experience in languages such as Unix shell scripts (bash, sh), PowerShell, Perl, Python.
- Programming experience in languages such as PHP, .NET/C#, C¬¬++/C.
- Experience configuring and maintaining WordPress CMS.
- ITIL experience/training/certification.
- Project management experience/training/certification.
- License management.
- Backup and disaster recovery experience.

- Meet with faculty & staff to design and implement technical solutions. For example,Should we host Qiime2 software locally, run it on the university high performance computer (Summit) or use cloud provider. What memory, core and storage requirements should be used to build a server that will take greatest advantage of aggregating resource without inhibiting research.
- Meet with college and university level IT staff to ensure service alignment. Service alignment, an ITIL concept, implies that IT is aligned with the needs of the client, this time the college and its researchers. Specifically, it starts with the college strategic plan and flows to the end users in an iterative continuous improvement cycle.
- Attend meetings and build relationships at department, college, university, and vendor levels.
